Drawing made in YUVAWhat are shape and graffiti swatches?

YUVA's activities involve drawing with shapes. Before beginning any activity, you select a shape swatch with which to create a composition.

A swatch is a collection of shapes with an inherent character – some are geometric, others are organic, some are precise and others are abstract. These shapes have been created carefully to be both versatile and suggestive – you will find yourself inspired to draw a house one day and a jungle scene the next! To create a cartoon character one day and a stencil pattern for your room the next!

There are five Standard Shape Swatches offered by YUVA – called LUNA, SOMA, MERA, JUNO and DOMA – scroll down to read what inspired these below.

If that’s not enough, every month, there’s a new Mystery Swatch introduced to the collection. They will be available only for a limited time, and are constantly changing in response to the season, to what we see in our travels or to suggestions from you!

But wait, there’s more!! We couldn’t resist…

The Graffiti Swatch is pure fun! It contains a variety of ready-made scribbles that can be used as eyes, noses, hair, smiles or frowns so that your characters can have expressions; or as wheels, rain, and clouds so your city scenes can have detail. This swatch has some fixed shapes, but others change to coordinate with the mystery shape swatch each month.

“I love the shapes and colors!!”  Erica, Age 9, YUVA Artist and Contributor to YUVA-Ideabooks

How the Shape Swatches were created:

"LUNA" combines curved and straight-line geometrics and was created by deconstructing the parts of a boat.

"SOMA" contains organic forms inspired by creatures of the tropical jungle.

"MERA" emerges through a stylization of ancient eastern numbers that are the basis of our current numeral system.

"JUNO" transforms the common elements of the Cyrillic script into a set of shapes.

"DOMA" was inspired by the mosaic compositions in the artwork of artist Gustav Klimt.
